Cavity and Tooth Decay Treatments in Woodland Hills
Restore your oral health and protect your teeth with dental cleaning, cavity fillings, and tooth decay treatment at House Of Smiles.
Tooth decay (dental caries) is a softening and breakdown of enamel caused by acids produced when bacteria feed on sugars and starches left on the teeth. Over time, these acids dissolve minerals in the enamel, leading to a cavity. Once a cavity forms, the tooth cannot rebuild itself; a professional restoration is needed to stop the process.
At House Of Smiles, we primarily use tooth-colored composite fillings for small to mid-sized cavities. Composite is a mixture of acrylic resin and finely ground glass that can be color-matched to your natural tooth. It bonds directly to enamel and dentin, allowing more of your natural tooth structure to be preserved compared with older metal fillings.
What happens during a composite filling
- The tooth and surrounding area are gently numbed.
- Decayed, softened tooth structure is removed.
- The remaining tooth surface is cleaned, conditioned, and treated with a bonding agent.
- Composite material is placed in layers and cured with a special light.
- The filling is shaped to match your bite and polished for a smooth finish.
Most fillings can be completed in a single visit. It is normal to experience minor sensitivity to hot and cold for a short time afterward; this generally improves as the tooth adjusts. If discomfort does not improve, we will re-evaluate to ensure the bite and nerve remain healthy.
Why timely cavity treatment matters
If decay is not treated early, it can extend deeper into the tooth and reach the nerve, causing pain, infection, or an abscess. At that stage, a root canal or extraction may be the only predictable options. Untreated decay can also contribute to gum inflammation and affect neighboring teeth.
To reduce your risk of cavities, we recommend:
- Brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
- Daily interdental cleaning (floss or other devices)
- Limiting frequent sugary snacks and drinks
- Regular professional cleanings and exams
- Fluoride treatments and sealants for children and cavity-prone adults
If you notice sensitivity, dark spots, or rough areas on your teeth, schedule an exam at House Of Smiles so we can address the issue while it is still small.
