Don’t delay a dental emergency evaluation

Dental emergencies can appear suddenly and often involve pain, swelling, or visible damage. Prompt evaluation and treatment can relieve symptoms, protect your teeth, and reduce the risk of serious infection.
Common emergencies we see at House Of Smiles include:
  • Severe toothache or throbbing pain
  • Swelling of the gums, cheek, or jaw
  • Knocked-out or loosened teeth
  • Broken, cracked, or fractured teeth
  • Lost crowns or broken bridges
  • Broken dentures or partials
  • Soft tissue injuries (lip, cheek, tongue)

What to do if you have a dental emergency

  • Call House Of Smiles immediately: (818) 225-0093. We will do our best to see you as soon as possible.
  • Toothache: Rinse with warm water, gently floss around the tooth, and avoid very hot or cold foods. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help until you are seen, if appropriate for your medical history.
  • Knocked-out tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Gently rinse if dirty, and if possible place it back into the socket. If not, store it in milk or saline and bring it with you.
  • Broken tooth or filling: Save any pieces, avoid chewing on that side, and call for an appointment.
  • Swelling or fever: These can be signs of infection that may need urgent care and possibly antibiotics.
At your emergency visit, we will:
  • Take a brief medical history and describe your symptoms
  • Perform targeted x-rays as needed
  • Provide short-term relief (such as smoothing sharp edges, medications, or temporary restorations)
  • Outline definitive treatment options such as fillings, root canal therapy, crowns, extractions, or repair of existing work
We will also discuss risks of delaying treatment, especially in cases of infection, where waiting can lead to spreading swelling or more extensive procedures.
