Gingivitis Treatment and Gum Care in Woodland Hills
Plaque bacteria can infect the spaces between your gums and teeth.
Gum disease is an infection and inflammation of the tissues that support the teeth. Early gum disease (gingivitis) is common and often causes red, swollen, or bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing. At this stage, the bone that holds the teeth is usually not yet affected, and the condition is typically reversible with professional cleanings and improved home care.
If inflammation is not controlled, it can progress to periodontitis, where the attachment between teeth and bone is gradually lost. Deep pockets form between the teeth and gums, plaque and tartar accumulate in these pockets, and the supporting bone begins to shrink away. Over time, this can lead to loose teeth and eventual tooth loss. Gum disease has also been linked with other health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
How we evaluate gum health
At House Of Smiles, we:
- Measure pocket depths around each tooth
- Check for bleeding, swelling, and recession
- Review x-rays to assess bone levels
- Discuss factors such as smoking, dry mouth, medications, and systemic health
Treatment options
- Gingivitis care: Typically involves professional cleaning, improved home brushing and flossing, and possibly topical antimicrobials or fluoride.
- Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning): For early to moderate periodontitis, we clean below the gumline and smooth root surfaces to remove plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins.
- Periodontal maintenance: After active treatment, more frequent cleanings (every 3–4 months) help maintain stability.
- Referral to a periodontist: In some advanced cases, we may recommend collaboration with a gum specialist.
What you can do at home
- Brush twice daily with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
- Clean between teeth every day (floss or interdental brushes)
- Use mouthrinses if recommended
- Avoid smoking or vaping
- Maintain regular visits so we can monitor your gums and adjust your care plan
If you notice bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath, or gum tenderness, please schedule an evaluation. Early treatment is far simpler than managing advanced disease.
